A new improved Forge is well on its way!
We are delighted that Craig Ramus is now running the Forge.
Craig is very experienced in running community shops - and he’s won awards for it too!
He took over on 1 April (no, there is no significance to the date) and already he has made significant and very positive changes.
There is a lot more stock in the shop - including a great selection of fresh fruit and vegetable. Craig gets up at crack of dawn to visit Brighton Market for most of it, and the perishable items are kept gently chilled to keep things fresh.
The chiller is much fuller, there is a selection of take-away foods.
As well as excellent quality good value meat from Jordans of Rose Green, we now have meat from the award winning John Murray at Loxwood. You must try his sausages!
There are too many other improvements to mention across the shop - come and have a look.
A new cafe menu is due any day as well, with lots more home-made goods such as quiches. The legendary sausage rolls are still on the menu of course and we now offer a vegetarian version.
Its all work in progress - with more improvements to following in the coming weeks and months.
Christmas & New Year opening arrangements
New - a charming & special Slindon book "Midnight & Mister Perkins"
We are delighted to have signed copies of this very charming & rather special Slindon book, the perfect gift.
This childrens story features two Slindon characters Midnight & Mister Perkins! (and Bailey the dog of course). You may have spotted them in the village
The book was written by Jeremy IAnson and beautifully illustrated by Sandra Izard a well-known local artist. Both are residents of Slindon and regular customers we’re pleased to say.
Midnight and Mister Perkins could be the perfect gift for pre-school children (age range 3-5), but of course its a good read for all ages! & all cat lovers.

New in - 'Seriously Real' ice cream from Pulborough
In our ice-cream freezer you’ll now find a new range of ice cream, made locally in Pulborough by Seriously Real.
Seriously Real is committed to producing high quality dairy ice creams and sorbets. They only use the freshest of ingredients, to ensure that the product you receive is first class. For example, the fruit ice creams contain bits of fruit.
One of the defining factors of the taste of great ice cream is the cream
Wherever possible they use locally sourced ingredients, to include local milk and cream from award winning Southview Farm Dairy in Bury just a few miles from us. They are one of the few remaining traditional dairy farm left in West Sussex, who process their own milk on the farm. Their herd of cows are Holstein and Guernsey cross, which Seriously Real think produce the best milk and cream.

We think they are right when they say theirs is the best Ice Cream in Sussex!
The flavours are amazing……we like them all and its naughty to pick favourites but Black Forest Gateau is unusual - and as wicked as it sounds, and in the run up to Christmas we’re especially pleased to have Mince Pie & Brandy.

Remembrance Day - Sunday 8 November
On Remembrance Day we will be observing the 2 minutes silence at 11am.
Carol is making some Remembrance Day Cup cakes - and all profits will be donated to the British Legion poppy appeal.
We will also be honoured to offer complimentary beverages throughout the day to anyone in uniform or wearing service medals.

Pumpkins & Halloween
October is Pumpkin time in Slindon! and Robin Upton has now finished this years amazing display, which attracts people from far and wide.
The display is up until the beginning of November - this year its an RNLI boat!
Do drop in and see us for coffee & cake, lunch or afternoon tea.
The National Trust will run their scary ‘Walk of Doom’ from 6 to 8pm on Saturday 31 October. IF YOU WANT TO GO ON THE WALK IT IS ESSENTIAL TO BOOK WITH THE NATIONAL TRUST (and not us….call them on 01243 814730).
The Forge will be open that evening and serving hot drinks, soup and filled jacket potatoes!
Slindon Apple Day - Saturday 10 October 2015Apple Day is this Saturday next door in the Forge field and it is a bigger event than last year with live music and the farmers market bring spare apples and join in the apple pressing great fun for all the family from 10am to 4pm - £1 entry.
Whats Happening ..
Apple pressing to make cider and fruit juice - all are welcome to join in, and if you have any spare apples (including windfalls) do bring them along
Fruit identification with the experts, who will also bring along a massive display of different apple cultivars. If you have a ‘mystery’ apple tree and want to find out what variety it is, bring along an apple or two (plus some leaves) for the experts to look at.
Live cooking demonstrations with the Community Chef from 10.00a.m.
Apple pie and crumble competition (see details below), with the winners announced at 1pm.
Farmers market (Eartham Lamb, Cakes, chutneys, local Apple Juice from Sussex Orchards and much more),
Live music throughout the day including the South Downs folk singers at 12.00 noon and 1.15pm , live folk music a.m. & p.m. with Bang on the Ear, Said The Maiden, Renegade Dogs.
Morris Dancers - times to be confirmed.
Mobile Pizza van, a bar with beer and snacks c/o The George, Eartham
and finally . games such as skittles, coconut shy and apple bobbing.

- Entries must be home made, by the named entrant.
- Entrants may enter into the pie and crumble competitions
- Entries must be at the Forge Field no later than 11.15am to be judged
- Fillings must be predominantly apple based.
If you have any of our demi-johns left over from last year, please can you drop them off to the National Trust yard (off the same drive as Slindon College) in advance of the day so we can sterilise them.

Crop for the shop...
Its that time of year when many people have a glut of home-grown fruit or veg.
'Crop for the Shop’ is our way of making a success of that - for both gardeners and shoppers alike. It saves food waste too.
If YOU like the idea of buying home-grown fruit & veg, then look out for the ‘Cropped for the Shop’ display just inside the door. Gill, our very own home-baker & preserve maker is also using some to make our own preserves as well. (Damson jam on its way!).
If you HAVE a surplus of fruit or veg then bring them in and we’ll swap them for vouchers for tea or coffee in the cafe.
Spring flowers in SlindonWritten on 14 April - it changes every day so we hope to update it!
Slindon is full of flowers all spring - in the hedgerows, in the gardens and especially in the woods.
The best way to see them is to follow the Forge walk through Slindon Park - click here to download a copy, or pick one up in the shop (30p).
The daffodils are beginning to go over, but if you are quick, you can see them in their full glory - they are all over the village, but the bank on School Hill is probably the best, along with our own in the Forge garden.
Cycle racks and a smart new pavement thanks to West Sussex County Council
Many thanks to West Sussex County Council for installing 3 new cycle racks, and sorting out the pavement outside the Forge. They kindly got rid of an ugly trip hazard right by our entrance pathway (something that has bugged us since the day we opened!) and provided useful extra faciltiies for our many cycling friends. Special thanks to out County Councillor Derek Whittington who made it all happen, and Ben Whiffen at West Sussex Highways who organised all the works. Much appreciated!
